Into The Wild: Our Unforgettable Kaziranga Photography Workshop

Kaziranga—just the name evokes visions of vast grasslands, mist-laden mornings, and the unmistakable silhouette of the one-horned rhinoceros emerging through golden light. Our recent wildlife photography workshop at this UNESCO World Heritage Site was nothing short of extraordinary. Nestled in the heart of Assam, Kaziranga delivered on every front—thrilling wildlife sightings, stunning photographic moments, and a deeply enriching learning experience.

THE REALM OF THE RHINO AND BEYOND

Kaziranga is globally celebrated for being the stronghold of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, but it offers much more than its flagship species. Set across the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River, the park is a rich tapestry of tall elephant grass, marshes, tropical forests, and oxbow lakes. It is one of India’s most biodiverse landscapes—ideal for immersive wildlife photography.

Our workshop was held from 31st January to 4th February 2025, strategically planned during peak wildlife activity. Over five days, we conducted six meticulously scheduled safaris, covering all four core zones—Central (Kohora), Western (Bagori), Eastern (Agaratoli), and Burapahar. This gave participants a panoramic experience of Kaziranga’s ecological variety and visual richness.

12 ARTISTS, ONE WILD JOURNEY

The workshop brought together 12 passionate photographers from across India and abroad—each carrying their own unique perspective, but united by their love for the wild and the lens. It was heartening to see such dedication, curiosity, and camaraderie in every safari, discussion, and campfire evening. Whether it was a beginner eager to master camera settings or an experienced hand chasing that once-in-a-lifetime frame, the spirit of learning was constant.

FRAMES THAT MOVED US

Kaziranga’s wildlife gave us more than we could ask for. We encountered over 40 rhinoceroses, many in golden light or emerging dramatically through mist and grass. Some gave us close-up portrait opportunities; others offered wide-angle compositions against breathtaking skies.

BUT THE RHINO WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING.

We photographed majestic wild elephants on the move, elegant swamp deer (barasingha) crossing wetlands, and imposing wild water buffalo with massive horns glinting in the sun. The early morning fog added atmosphere; the evening light added magic.

One moment I’ll always remember: a lone rhino, standing motionless on the horizon, its silhouette framed against a fiery dawn sky. Shot with the Sony Alpha 1 and 400mm f/2.8, it became an iconic frame—a reminder of why we chase these fleeting moments.

A PARADISE FOR BIRD LOVERS

Kaziranga is a birder’s dream. We captured images of greater adjutant storks, pelicans, fish eagles, kingfishers, bar-headed geese, and several species of ducks, herons, and cormorants. The Eastern Zone, in particular, offered abundant birdlife and lush wetland compositions that tested our timing, patience, and technical skills.

A PREMIUM RETREAT AMIDST NATURE

We stayed at a premium resort that beautifully balanced comfort and wilderness. After long safaris, it became our base for rejuvenation and reflection. Delicious meals, personalised hospitality, and peaceful surroundings created the perfect atmosphere for creative growth.

Evenings were reserved for image reviews, technical masterclasses, post-processing sessions, and deep conversations about ethics, storytelling, and fieldcraft. These sessions fostered shared learning and lasting friendships—hallmarks of a meaningful workshop.
