is a famous wildlife sanctuary and tiger reserve located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, India. Established in 1936, it is one of the oldest national parks in India and covers an area of approximately 520 square kilometers (200 square miles) of diverse landscapes, including hills, marshes, grasslands, and riverine belts. The park is named after Jim Corbett, a renowned conservationist and hunter turned naturalist, who played a crucial role in its establishment.
The park is renowned for its rich biodiversity and is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. It is particularly known for its population of Bengal tigers and is regarded as one of the best places in India to spot these majestic cats in the wild. Other notable wildlife species found in the park include Asian elephants, leopards, sloth bears, Indian gray mongoose, Himalayan black bears, wild boars, deer (such as spotted deer and sambar), and a wide range of bird species.
Jim Corbett National Park is characterized by diverse vegetation, including dense forests of sal trees, mixed deciduous forests, grasslands, and riverine vegetation along the Ramganga River. The park's varied ecosystem supports a wide array of plant species, including bamboo, ferns, shrubs, climbers, and medicinal plants.
Dhikala is one of the popular zones within the park. It offers breathtaking landscapes and is located by the Ramganga River, providing opportunities for wildlife sightings. Dhikala also features a forest rest house, which offers accommodation facilities for overnight stays amidst the wilderness.
Visitors to Jim Corbett National Park can enjoy various safari options to explore the park's diverse wildlife and natural beauty. Jeep safaris and elephant safaris are available, allowing tourists to venture deep into the forest under the guidance of trained naturalists and forest guides. The safaris are conducted in the early morning and late afternoon, providing the best chances of spotting wildlife.
Located in Kaladhungi, the Corbett Museum is a heritage museum dedicated to the life and achievements of Jim Corbett. It houses his personal belongings, photographs, hunting memorabilia, and exhibits on wildlife conservation. The museum offers insights into the history and legacy of the park's conservation efforts.
Jim Corbett National Park also offers opportunities for adventure activities such as river rafting in the Kosi River, trekking, angling, and bird watching. The park's picturesque surroundings and tranquil environment make it an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts.
The Park is open to visitors from mid-November to mid-June. The best time to visit is during the winter months (November to February) when the weather is pleasant, and wildlife sightings are more frequent.
